I think I've mentioned it here, but next year's Sunday School theme is all about rocks. Nothing is in stone yet (haha... tell me you got that terrible pun) but I'm close to narrowing down the rock stories. Rocks play some role in the following stories-- even if it's minor.
*The Tower of Babel
*Daniel in the lions' den (A rock is rolled at the entrance to seal him in... and if you think I'm picking this because I want the Sunday School kids to learn the Lost & Found slinky song, ding ding ding we have a winner. That's absolutely why I want to do this story.)
*David and Goliath (Let's make slingshots!!!)
*Rockabye baby... awww... Jesus is born.
*Build a house on a rock and not on sand (rock= YAY! sand=BOO!)
*That shady lady that they wanted to stone but Jesus said something like "Yo. You without sin, throw rocks at her. Hmm... nobody threw rocks. Interesting."
*Easter-- something about a stone being rolled away?
*Living stones/Peter is a cornerstone.
So this is where I need your help with the brainstorming process. I sat at Java Joe's and started a list of things I think of when I hear the word ROCK. Here's my list, but I know I'm missing stuff so add to it in the comments section, please.
STUFF I THINK OF WHEN I THINK OF ROCKS:
rockstars
rock and roll
rocking chairs
can you smell what the rock is cooking?
rockstars on H (i love michael knott)
we will rock you
Jesus rocks my face off
Pet Rocks(I still have the one Mom gave Grandma in the 70's... if I could only find it)
ROCK-tober
rock a bye baby
Rock the Cradle of Love (I doubt that song is at all appropriate, but I'm just brainstorming here)
rocking boat on waves
ROCK. (which i think of in terms of tenacious D)
Sock puppets... could there be rock puppets?
Barack and Roll (Ellyn's t-shirt)
Jesus is the Rock
Rock a doodle doo (I made that up)
Rockin' the Suburbs (I heart Ben Folds)
Rocky
Ricky and Bullwinkle
Fraggle Rock
Rock me like a hurricane
Shock Rock
Rockin' Robin
Petra means Rock (haha... oh college I miss you)
Simon Peter=rock
Rap, Rock & Soul (old school dc talk party... my place...)
Estes Park, Colorado and the Ore Cart
Polished rocks (not Polish rocks.)

It's July! Let the randomness ensue...
I've been looking at VBS stuff a lot today. Good times. I'm getting excited as I plan out the schedule and look at the list of possible "surfers." There are also quite a few people willing to volunteer. I am always so impressed at how the congregation of this church steps up to help when asked. People are so quick to offer food, supplies and time for VBS. Awesome!
Tonight we meet to get our ducks in a row. Sidenote: ducks in a row might be my favorite saying. Baby ducks are so fun. I imagine getting them in a row is a lot like herding cats.
My brain is spinning in a lot of directions today. I don't know that I have conclusive thoughts or even words for the whirring, but I know I'm thinking more about the need for prayer personally and as a church. I'm also in idea mode for ways to amp up what we do with youth group-- both junior high and high school. Sunday School is on my mind-- thinking through stories about rocks.
Guess it doesn't hurt to throw out the reminder: Adult VBS happens July 20-24. Kid VBS is July 27-31. Questions can be directed to me on both. Drop me a line and let me know how your summer is going. Hit me up with ideas for fall and beyond, too.
Seriously... everything is so random in my head right now I'd be able to talk about Federer losing to Rafa, the merits of blended lattes vs. ice cream and what to put in my office aquarium all at once. More water frogs or fish this time? Hmmmm...
